How to use - Window Films (Architectural)

FAQ

  • Wrapping a vehicle is the most innovative way to change the color and finish of a vehicle. It is done by applying pressure or heat sensitive adhesive-backed vinyl film (of almost any color or finish) by hand on top of smooth surfaces (like vehicle panels, cabinets, boat hulls, etc).

  • The cost of a vinyl wrap depends on two basic factors: what vinyl material you plan on using, who plans on vinyl wrapping the vehicle (or any surface) and how much material you need.

    The type of material:

    • Every material is manufactured differently. A standard matte film is less expensive to produce than a mirror chrome film. Full length vinyl rolls can cost anywhere from $500 for standard finishes and upwards of $2,500 for luxury wraps like chrome.

    • The color of a film usually does not influence the cost of a vinyl roll.

    • Usually, the finish or texture of the vinyl wrap can also determine the cost. Carbon and brushed textured films are usually more expensive than matte or gloss films.

    • Many specialty colors and finishes are constructed differently. For example: a roll of VVIVID Tech Art Gloss Carbon Fiber is made up of 5 layers to give it it's realistic finish, while also being able to conform and stretch with damaging the material. All of these factors will increase the cost of these complex vinyl wraps.

The amount of material you need:

    • Obviously, larger vehicles require more vinyl material.

    • Every panel needs an extra foot or two of vinyl to completely encompass that surface.

    • Plan to purchase 10% extra material just incase something goes wrong.

  • No but it lasts a very long time, most wraps last for 5-10 years on average but it all depends on what vinyl is used and what the conditions are where you drive and store your car. The Vinyl film can also be removed simply without leaving any residues, making your car look just like it was before the wrap.

Vinyl wrap usually comes with two different adhesives. Architectural and Automotive glues.

    1. Architectural is a permanent adhesive meant to be used on furniture, walls, metals, railings and other interior and exterior architectural applications. This type of glue usually has a strong solvent based smell.

    2. Automotive car wrap adhesive is NON-PERMANENT. It is meant to be taken off at any moment's notice within 7 years. It is an acrylic based adhesive that will not eat clear coats or damage the surface structure of a vehicle. There is no solvent based smell to this adhesive.

Chinese/Korean vinyl wraps vs 3M 1080 Scotchprint, Avery Supreme Wrap and VViViD XPO car wraps.

    • Chinese films use solvent based corrosive adhesive to keep their films down. This is a dangerous adhesive mixture for your paint. It will most likely remove your clear and paint coats within 2-3 months.

    • Don't believe us? stick Chinese vinyl wrap on foam and watch it melt the surface. 3M, Avery and VViViD automotive grade films are 100% safe for your car's surface up to 5-7 years depending on the film.

  • If you need to cut vinyl without pressing the blade directly against the paint, use a filament cutting tape, like Knifeless or WrapCut. It is an easy to use thin piece of tape with a string directly on the bottom of it. Apply the filament tape between the vinyl and the surface being wrapped. Then just simply pull on the string and it will slice through the vinyl with a clean cut.

  • These times may vary due to complexity of the project, difficulty of the vinyl, experience of the installer and the size of the car. A straightforward wrap will take a professional about 8-12 hours to do and someone who is new at wrapping about 16 to 20 hours.

  • Pros:

    • A vinyl wrap allows you to achieve colors and textures that paint cannot duplicate.

    • Some vinyl looks exactly like paint finishes.

    • Wrapping a car is a cheaper alternative to painting it. Painting an entire car can cost between $3,000 to $10,000 while vinyl wrapping costs an average of $1,500.

    • Vinyl wrapping is temporary, so you can reimagine your vision as you please.

    • Paint jobs can devalue the resale value of the car, while vinyl wrapping does not.

    • Painting cars can also void any warranties and lease agreements of the vehicle, while vinyl wrapping does not.

    • Vinyl wrapped vehicles are protected from minor scratches, vandalism, rock chips, scuffs, and paint deteriorating chemicals. Some car owners even go the extra mile to vinyl wrap the entire vehicle in clear paint protection film to protect the vehicle.

    • No special machinery, expensive equipment, body suits and specially designed garages are required.

    Cons:

    • If installing yourself, vinyl wrapping can take a lot of experience, close attention to detail and patience.

    • Vinyl wrapping may require removal of several vehicle parts.

    • Installing vinyl would also require steady hands as a blade trimming the vinyl can tread off course and scratch vehicle paint.

    • Before vinyl wrapping, a thorough cleaning and detailing of every crevasse is needed or else the vinyl will peel over a dirty surface.

    • Vinyl wraps can only last 5-10 years before fading.
